I read an article on line “BBC - Christmas Party”. It was posted on the BBC website.
A student at the University Leicester in England, who is president of the campus volunteer organization, decided to have a Christmas party on campus and involve senior citizens who are residents of three seniors only residences in the area.
She enlisted the help of other students who blew off classes for the day. They set up tables and chairs, greeted guests and welcomed them with refreshments.
There was a bingo game with prizes and they had several on campus groups put on a show which included a gospel choir. They sang traditional Christmas carols and some African songs. The guests had such a wonderful time.
Maybe your church or civic group would want to try something like this. Contact a local senior complex and invite the residents to attend a Christmas party at your facility.
You could contact local schools, private and public, and see if their chorus or dance teams would perform for your guests. You could simplify things by just having coffee, tea, soft drinks and desserts: cookies, cakes and maybe ice cream, regular and sugar free. It may be a good idea to have some caffeine free drinks available.
You could play Christmas bingo with the folks. You can find the game on line and print your cards, etc. for the games. The student entertainers can be encouraged to spend some time with the party guests. You might ask your members to spend the week or so before the party finding inexpensive gifts for the guests or if you have the money in your organization, assign one or two people to go shopping. The kid could be rewarded by inviting them to your next social gathering at the church.
Make sure you have lots of Christmas CD’s to play when the kids are through performing. Everyone loves Christmas music. Encourage the senior citizens to tell how they celebrated Christmas as children, teenagers and young adults. How different things were back then! The kids will not likely know that TV was either not yet in the average home or there was one or two stations that were only available for part of the day.
Both the senior citizens and the high school kids can learn from and enjoy each other’s company. A win/win situation, this may be the best gift either group will get this year and isn’t this what Christmas is all about?
Of course you will already have the church hall decorated for your other scheduled activities. If you will be having a Christmas pageant, why not invite both groups to attend?
Your decorations don’t have to be expensive or fancy. You can get very nice decorations and party supplies at dollar and discount stores for way less than what party stores charge.
Discount department stores, drug stores and even supermarkets now sell Christmas decorations and supplies at affordable prices. Shop around, the bargains are out there.
The BBC - Christmas party article was the inspiration for the senior citizen/high school party. If you wanted you could hold your party for kids from a local group home or for families living in a shelter.
You can decorate in a formal theme for older guests and traditional elves, reindeer, Santa, etc. for kids, all at an affordable cost.
Let me tell you this, you will get such joy for having this kind of party and you will have saved some money for your group by spending less on the decorations and supplies. I know that I will always think of this kind of party as a BBC Christmas party.
