Do You Know Valentine Day facts?

Valentine Day Facts

Valentine Day or Saint Valentine Day is a holiday celebrated all over the world on 14 February?

We all know that this day is one such day when lovers express their love for each other through sending cards, flowers and presentations.

I came to know lot more than just these few known Valentine Day facts, which I would like to share with all of you. This day considered as a traditional day in the west and named after two Christian Martyr named Valentine and became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

The Valentine Day Facts seemed interesting to me and I thought of searching more on it. On searching, I found that this day is associated with mutual exchange of love notes in the form of valentine.

I had no idea that such a simple day can be much special by adding few zings. Hearts, cupids and doves is now symbolizing the valentine day while before the exchange of notes was sufficient to express love. However, with time, expressions have changed but the values have remained the same.

Lets go back now to the historical facts of Valentine Day. While some claim, the first recorded association of Valentine’s Day with romantic love is in Parliament of Foules by Geoffrey Chaucer and this may be the reason of misinterpretation. Chaucer writes:

“For this was on seynt Volantynys day Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.”

This poem was written to honor the first anniversary of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. It is said that readers have uncritically assumed that Chaucer was referring to the 14th of February, and this is evident from another fact as well that Chaucer was not talking about that day as mid February is an unlikely time for birds to be mating in England. However, this was not actually the reason behind celebrating Valentines Day.

It was celebrated to honor certain Christian martyr’s one Valentine of Rome and the other Valentine of Terni. Some critics say that they both were the same. In the modern times, this day has just evolved as the lover’s day but hardly any of us try to find out the actual truth behind it.

These facts must have created in you as it had in me a special interest. From now onwards whenever you will celebrate this day wonderfully, give one minute of the day in remembering these Valentine Day facts. I think it will surely enhance the flavor of the day. Hey! Happy Valentine’s Day!
