Valentines Day history is a bit of a mystery clouded by some legends that have been passed around since the early AD. and have continued to change after that. For most people, Valentines Day was declared for the priest that was in the bad graces of the Roman emperor Claudius II. There are two legends that have been passed down through the years pertaining to the Catholic and Protestant religions.
Both of these legends say that a bishop named Valentine had secret ceremonies of marriage that were opposed by Claudius II pertaining to young men that were not allowed to marry. He was later killed.
It is said that Valentine was put to death on February 14, 270 AD. This may him a Patron Saint and thus Valentines Day history is made and the day is recognized. However, it was not until the 14th century that people recognized the day for lovers.
It is said that the first one to associate the day with Valentine was Chaucer who wrote a poem for the engagement of Anne, Bohemia and Richard II of England associating this day with the engagement. This occurred in 1381. It is also believed that birds mated on this date according to medieval England and France.
Over the years, despite the Christian churches attempts to sanctify Valentine's Day, the love and romance continued to evolve though the Middle Ages. Eventually, handmade cards were made to give to loved ones. The cards were mad from hearts, cupids, ribbons and lace.
The Valentines Day history concludes with the findings of remains that are believed to be that of Saint Valentine in a Roman catacomb. This day is a day for lovers to come together and show each other how they feel in honor of the man that believed in love and marriage for those in love.
